Protected fur-bearer victim of hit and run

November 22, 2006

On the way to work on Nov. 14, Penn State Extension Agent Joe Fuller found this Fisher along the road by Woodbourne Sanctuary about one mile from his home in Dimock.

Apparently it had been hit by a car in the night. It was in very good shape.

Joe called the PA Game Commission; they came and said he had to buy a tag ($100) for it since fishers are protected in PA. They they normally don't let people keep them.

This was the first fisher the game officer had ever seen that had been hit in the road.

The game commission worked with Penn State and Frostburg University to reintroduce these to Pennsylvania in the mid 1990's.

There is a population of these furbearers in New York state. Joe wonders where this one came from. The fisher is in now in the hands of a taxidermist.
