Young Naturist Classes-2008

  • Classes meet Monday-Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 12:30 -3:30 pm.  Please pick up your child promptly.
  • Please dress appropriately for the day's activity and weather
  • I provide a snack (e.g., cookies, pretzels, etc.) and drink (lemonade, Cool-aid, water, etc.) each day.  Of course, you are welcome to provide an alternative snack for your child if you wish.
  • Parents are welcome to stay, but I may put you to work!
  • Weather:  some activities are weather dependent.  I have back-up activities for those days.  Classes will not be cancelled due to rain unless the forecast is for unrelenting rain.

Here's a typical schedule:

    • Monday:  Birdbanding and Birdwatching.  We will catch and band birds. A great day for photos!  Bring binoculars if you have them.  Loaners are available.
    • Tuesday:  Insect Day. We will be running through the fields with insect nets catching whatever we can.  Long pants are desirable.  We will begin to make an insect collection.
    • Wednesday:  Long Hike Day.  We will be taking a long 'explore' into the deep, dark old growth forest of Woodbourne.  We will make frequent stops to search for salamanders, mushrooms, wildflowers, or whatever else is out at the time.  It is often wet, so good hiking shoes are a must.  Small backpacks with drinks and a snack are advisable.
    • Thursday:  Lake or Stream Study Day.  We may be traveling off the property to a stream.  Swimsuits and footwear required!  (Young naturalists will NOT be allowed into the lake/stream without footwear.  Old sneakers are best, but 'watersocks' are OK.  Sandals are not a good idea.) I may need driving help from some parents.  This trip is obviously weather sensitive.  If it has rained in preceding days, we will not be able to do this.  Sometimes this trip visits the stream on the Keystone College campus in La Plume.
    • Alternative activities:  Mammals:  skins and skulls; a conservation project; Scavenger Hunt
